Products Description

Tracheal tube intubation is a medical procedure where a flexible plastic tube known as an endotracheal tube (ETT) is inserted into a patient's trachea through the mouth or nose to ensure adequate breathing. The procedure is usually performed in emergency situations where there is a need for immediate airway control or in surgical settings where general anesthesia is required.

Description

The ETT is connected to a mechanical ventilator that controls the patient's breathing by delivering oxygen-rich air to the lungs and removing carbon dioxide. Tracheal intubation is generally performed by a trained healthcare professional, such as an anesthesiologist, using specialized instruments called laryngoscopes to visualize the vocal cords in the patient's throat. Once the ETT is in place, the cuff placed around the ETT is inflated to create a seal and prevent the aspiration of gastric contents into the lungs. The ETT remains in place until it is no longer needed, after which it is removed.

While tracheal intubation is a life-saving intervention, it is not without risks and complications. These can include damage to the teeth, gums, tongue, trachea or vocal cords, aspiration of stomach contents, injury to the esophagus, infection, bleeding, and cardiac arrest. Careful preparation and proper technique are essential to minimize these risks, and the patient must be closely monitored during and after the procedure.

Differences between cuffed and uncuffed Tracheal Tube Intubation:

Cuffed Tracheal Tube Intubation is the process of inserting an endotracheal tube with an inflatable cuff at its distal end. This cuff is inflated once the tube has been placed in the trachea, creating a seal between the tube and the trachea. Cuffed tubes are used for patients undergoing general anesthesia or mechanical ventilation. Cuffed tubes offer better protection against aspiration and minimize the risk of air leaks. They are also recommended for pediatric patients because it helps maintain positive pressure inside the airways, decreasing the chances of collapsing, and reducing the risk of bronchoaspiration.

In uncuffed Tracheal Tube Intubation, the endotracheal tube does not contain an inflatable cuff, so there is no seal between the tube and the trachea. Consequently, air can flow freely around the tube, making it easier for foreign substances to enter the lungs. Uncuffed tubes are commonly used in emergency and trauma situations where speed is crucial, or during surgical procedures in adults that require deep sedation but don't necessarily need forced ventilation. Uncuffed tubes may also be used in cases such as for infants and young children because of their narrow airways and risk of upper airway obstruction, and cuffed tubes should be used with caution.
