Disposable Endotracheal Tube

Disposable endotracheal tube is a medical device used to secure an airway in patients requiring mechanical ventilation. It is a flexible plastic or rubber tube that is inserted through the patient's mouth or nose and down into the trachea, which allows oxygen to be delivered directly into the lungs.

Components:

Tube: The main part of the endotracheal tube is a long and flexible tube that is inserted into the patient's airway.

Cuff: The cuff is an inflatable balloon-like structure located at the distal end of the tube that is used to create a seal between the tube and the trachea. Inflating the cuff helps prevent air leakage around the tube, which could cause inadequate ventilation or aspiration.

Pilot balloon: A small balloon adjacent to the cuff that allows clinicians to quickly check whether the cuff is properly inflated and its pressure maintained by detecting a change in its size.

Connector: A universal connector present at the proximal end of the tube, which can be securely connected with breathing circuits and mechanical ventilators.

Murphy’s Eye/Optic:

A small opening near the tip of the tube that provides a secondary pathway for the air to flow, ensuring that air flow is maintained even if the tip of the tube is inadvertently blocked.

Stylet or guide wire:

A rigid but flexible tool used to assist the placement of the endotracheal tube through the vocal cords and into the trachea.

Radiopaque line: A thin, dark line running longitudinally on the side of the tube, which is clearly visible in X-rays and helps identify when the tube is in place.

Depth markings: Graduation marks printed on the tube exterior aid caregivers with guidance to the depth of the tube inserted for best positioning within airway.

Smooth, low-friction surfaces: The outer surface is smooth and often coated to decrease friction and facilitate insertion and removal without damage to oral or nasal tissue.

Multiple size options: Disposable endotracheal tubes come in various sizes ranging from preterm neonates to large adults so that the tube can fit snugly into a range of tracheal diameters.

High-volume/low-pressure cuff: An inflatable cuff seal helps prevent leaking of air decreasing leak around the tube and reducing lung injury, it also prevents aspiration by sealing the trachea.

Packages individually: Sterile packaging for each tube decreases the risk of contaminants, promoting infection control practices and limit cross-contamination.

Flexibility: These tubes are generally made from soft and flexible materials making the insertion process easy, reducing potential soft tissue trauma while making the patients more comfortable during the procedure.

Single-use: These are designed for one-time use only. After each application, the tube should be safely discarded.
